Northern minister calls for more trees

February 17, 2012

Michelle O’Neill, the Agriculture Minister up north, this week called on farmers to help increase woodland cover across the north of Ireland (but of course it is a wider island issue) by planting more trees on their farms but with not near enough emphasis on the need for greater planting of native species. We are all aware of the multiple benefits and multifunctionality of trees especially agroforestry species. Trees can contribute economically but also have social, recreational and health benefits and of course a range of biodiversity and ecosystem service functions including improved connectivity and enhanced habitats for beneficial insects and other fauna and flora, especially if native trees are being encouraged. Which brings me to CELT (Centre – Environmental Living and Training) an organization actively involved in trying to promote native trees and agroforests. Check out their informative website and get involved.
