“Sugar, Sugar”

While the Government has announced 300,000 euro fo bee-related research some beekeepers are resorting to sprinkling their honey bees with caster sugar to defeat the biggest threat to Irish honey bees, the varroa mite. Apparently, the bees lick it off their companions and the process causes great excitement in the hive, with the result that the mites get disturbed by the vibrations and fall off the bees. I wonder! In other news on pollinators, some of the UK’s rarest bumblebees are at risk of becoming extinct as a result of inbreeding, research suggests.
