Biodiversity! Er, what do you mean?

June 11, 2010

The Heritage Council have announced the findings of  their recent research on awareness, understanding and impact of biodiversity in Ireland and it isn’t exactly pretty reading, but mirrors the global findings that were recently reported at the CBD SBSTTA in May:

  • Awareness levels of biodiversity have not improved since 2007
  • Only 18% of Irish people know what biodiversity actually means
  • Greater agreement in 2010 on economic value of biodiversity as opposed to softer, recreational issues which emerged strongest in 2007
  • Public confused about relationship between climate change & biodiversity loss
  •

Heaven forbid what the public awareness and understanding of agricultural biodiversity might be!

Brings to mind MS Swaminathan recently highlighting the need for a Biodiversity Literacy Movement. The sooner the better. Biohappiness for all, as he would say.
