Who was Suiskaya?

March 11, 2010

Back to Erna Bennett again. In an interview which took place in 1994 Erna mentions spending many hours arguing with Jim Gregor, then Director of the Scottish Plant Breeding Station, on theoretical issues related to genetic conservation. In that interview Erna points out that Gregor was especially interested in a lot of the work of Suiskaya, who was a pupil of Vavilov, pointing out,

“Suiskaya was a woman, who was herself as remarkable as Vavilov was, who studied species formation. In fact, I found here absolutely fascinating as a researcher”.

Just who was Suiskaya? My limited attempts to find any information through the internet have led nowhere. However, the spelling maybe wrong as this is from an oral interview transcript. Maybe someone out there knows something and can help.

A quick check of Pistorius’ scientists, plant and politics and also of Loskutov’s Vavilov and his institute suggests that you are better off looking for E.N. Sinskaya (1889-1965) “russian agronomist, botanist and geographer” began her work at the VIR in 1921 (Loskutov, I.G, 1999, IPGRI, Rome).

Thank you for both posts Dirk, and both the clarification and the additional information. Certainly clears up some confusion (and makes a quick google search much more relevant!). I came across this obituary when Sinskaya passed away in 1965 http://www.springerlink.com/content/t96407n750225518/
