Relatively speaking

March 8, 2010

A few items on wild relatives. I forgot to mention that towards the end of 2009 the Botany & Plant Science discipline at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) hosted an International Workshop on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Crop Wild Relatives together with Genetic Heritage Ireland, Bioversity International and Irish Aid. The workshop featured expert speakers involved in crop wild relatives conservation and sustainable use activities from Bolivia, Madagascar, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Colombia and Ireland.

More up-to-date, Arachis rigonii  a crop wild relative studied as part of the UNEP GEF CWR project  is being featured today as the Species of the day on the IUCN Red list website, quite a rarity to have CWR showcased in such a fashion.
