Who are our guardians of agrobiodiversity?

March 5, 2010

All that talk about Erna Bennett and the Diversity for Life campaign to find Guardians of Diversity got me wondering who might qualify as homegrown guardians. No doubt about Erna even if her work was everywhere else but Ireland. For other examples there is certainly a nice story of custodians surrounding Irish apples and the emergence of the Irish Seed Savers Association and the early collaborations between Anita Hayes and Dr. Keith Lamb who had conducted the original research into native Irish apples in the 1940s and Dr. Michael Hennerty former head of the Department of Horticulture in University College Dublin who has continued this.

Who are the other guardians? Who nurtured the cereal landraces for thatching? what about other landraces?
