Demise of the Irish sugar beet industry

February 18, 2010

The latest issue of the Irish Seed Saver (ISSA, Spring 2010) contains a couple of interesting articles about the decline of sugar beet production in Ireland. One article by Dermot Grogan covers a brief history of Irish sugar beet. A while back Dermot also contributed an interesting article on  sugar beet genetic resources in Ireland as part of the European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources (ECPGR) Working Group on Beta. The report of that particular working group meeting (and Dermot’s full paper) has    published by Bioversity International and is available for download. The Working Group site itself contains a number of important resources and databases related to Beta conservation. The next meeting of the Working Group is scheduled for 2011.
